Cause & Effect: The House At The End Of The Street

Author's Note: I will be using the book The House At The End Of The Street  for my Cause and Effect Piece. The climax of the book occurs when Carrie Ann hits her head on the ground (turning point).

A cool summer breeze whizzed through the oak trees.  The day started off like any other, simple and sweet like it should be.  The scent of lemonade and Popsicles wafted through the summer air.  The ancient wooden swing set could barely stand straight as Ryan and Carrie Ann flew through the air like birds.  Wobbling and squealing as if it was about to collapse the swing set had seen better days.  Carrie Ann giggled with delight as she grasped Ryan's hand.  Together the kids laughed and swung, bound together by hand.  What once was chuckles became horrified gasps and shrieks as the quivering hands broke apart.  As Carrie Ann's head bounced off the ground, stirring the dirt into a puff of dusty fog.   Ryan knew it was his fault.  He knew Carrie Ann would be scarred for life.  He knew his little sister's life would now be black and white forever.

5 years later...

Ever since that one summer day nothing had been the same for Carrie Ann.  Friendless and lonely, Carrie Ann could only dream of a day where she wouldn't be trapped indoors.  Frail and hollow she resembled like a rag doll.  Empty and meaningless she felt like her life was done and over. She missed the days when she could run and play with all of the other kids.  Envy overwhelmed her each and every day, waiting patiently for her revenge.  If Carrie Ann couldn't play, why should the other kids be able to?  Her mind was like a toddlers, nothing was fair.
Endless hours became days, and Carrie Ann's head was practically spinning.  Everything was a blur to her, nothing was real anymore.  Life seemed to be a pathetic dream.  If only she hadn't let go of Ryan's hand.  Her one regret in life, that haunted her everyday.  What if she would have just hung on for the ride, and didn't dare let go?  Would she still be trapped in her own mind games, trying to  escape?  Carrie Ann could still feel her brother's hand, wrapped in her own.  What caused her to let go?  Now the effects were threatening, her life was over.  She faced the facts realizing that if she wouldn't have been goofing around on the swing set she wouldn't be hidden away in the cellar.
